Data protection statement

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (SMNS) takes data protection seriously and attaches great importance to the protection of your personal rights. We comply with statutory data protection provisions and use technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal data (name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, etc.) from unauthorized access, misuse, destruction, and loss. We strive to continuously improve our security measures in accordance with technological developments.


2. Use of personal data

We use your personal data only for the purpose for which it was collected (for example to answer inquiries, register for guided tours, send information or subscribe to the newsletter, participate in contests). This data will be deleted immediately following completion of the action. The data entered in the online form for the newsletter will be stored until permission is revoked. Your data will not be transferred to third parties without your express consent. All persons working for us are obliged to protect data confidentiality in accordance with § 6 LDSG. In addition, SMNS provides training to staff regarding data protection.


3. Logging of access

Every time a user accesses the website of the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart and every time a file is accessed, data about this action is temporarily stored and processed in a log file. This log is for internal systems-related and statistical purposes to improve our information services. At irregular intervals, the logged data are evaluated internally by employees of the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (Administration, Press Office), for instance the number of hits over the course of an exhibition. The evaluation is not user-related, meaning that the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart does not create personal user profiles, even using pseudonyms (e.g. IP addresses). The data will also not be merged with other data sources and therefore do not allow identification of specific persons.
To be logged:

  • IP address
  • Name of the retrieved file
  • Date and time of retrieval
  • Amount of data transferred
  • Access status (file transfer, file not found, command not executed, etc.)
  • Referrer (the referrer is the internet address of the website from which the user has been linked to the website of the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart, such as search engines or other pages)

4. Use of cookies

Our website uses Matomo (formerly Piwik), a web analysis service. Matomo (formerly Piwik) uses cookies, which are text files that are stored on your computer and that enable us to analyze use of the website. This is an important tool used to help continuously improve our website. Usage information generated by the cookie (including your shortened IP address) is transmitted to our server and stored for analytical purposes, and the results are used to help optimize the webpage. Your IP address will be immediately anonymized during this process so that you remain cannot be identified as a user. The information generated by the cookie about your use of this website will not be disclosed to third parties. You may refuse the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser; however in this case you may not be able to use all the features of the website.

If you do not agree with the storage and evaluation of data from your visit, then you can refuse the storage and use of the cookie at any time with a click of the mouse. In this case, a so-called opt-out cookie is stored by your browser, with the result that Matomo (formerly Piwik) does not collect session data. Attention: If you delete your cookies the opt-out cookie is also deleted, and may need to be reactivated.


5. E-mail

If you send an e-mail to the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart your personal data will be used only for correspondence with you. The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart currently uses no encryption techniques. We therefore point out that data transferred via the internet is unencrypted, in other words unsecured, and that the transmitted data can thus be accessed during the transfer process by unauthorized persons or even falsified.


6. Newsletter

In order to subscribe to the newsletter we need your e-mail address. This will only be used for sending the newsletter, and will be treated confidentially and not forwarded to third parties. Subscription to the newsletter can be cancelled at any time without explanation. Please use the webform “Newsletter” on our homepage.


8. Social networks

8.1. Facebook

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart operates a fan page on Facebook. The link to this Facebook page is marked on our homepage by the logo of the social network. When you access this Facebook page, your browser establishes a direct connection to the Facebook servers. Please note that Facebook’s data processing is outside the jurisdiction of the European Union. The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart has no influence on the extent of the data collected by Facebook, nor on how the data are used by Facebook. Even if you are not a member of Facebook, there is still the possibility that Facebook will save your IP address.

8.2 Microblogs

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart also offers information on current topics and an additional means of contact via Twitter and Instagram. The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart has no influence on the type and extent of data collected by Twitter and Instagram, the nature of the data use, or the use or disclosure of these data to third parties. We remind users that social networking is just one of several ways to contact or obtain information from the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart. Alternatively, the information on these sites can also be found on our website at www.naturkundemuseum-bw.de.

8.3 Science Blog

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart is responsible for the Science Blog smnstuttgart-blog.


9. Protection of minors

Children and persons under 18 years of age should not submit any personal data to us without the consent of a parent or guardian. Without parental consent we will not solicit, collect, or disclose personal information of children.


10. Changes to the data protection statement

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart reserves the right to amend the data protection statement in accordance with technical developments and changes to the legal framework. The date of the current version of the statement can be found at the end of the data protection statement.


11. Your rights

Upon written request we will gladly inform you free of charge if and which of your personal data we are storing. Should incorrect information be stored despite our efforts to ensure that your data is correct and up-to-date, we will immediately correct this at your request. In addition, you have the right to delete or block your data. You may also revoke your consent to the collection, processing, and use of your personal data at any time.
